Festival brings arts gala to Scarborough
6 February 2012
Students, staff and graduates from the University of Hull’s
Scarborough Campus will be playing their part at this month’s
annual Coastival festival of music, art, comedy and theatre.
Coastival’s Rather Splendid Day Out will see a
packed line-up of events take place in venues across Scarborough,
including at the University campus, on 11 February.
Among the
evening highlights are award-winning theatre company Slung Low with
Darkness at the Sun Court, the first of five pieces to be
performed at arts festivals across North Yorkshire under the
collective name Converging Paths. Actor Craig Charles will
also host a music showcase at The Spa Theatre.

During the day there will be art exhibitions, film screenings and
family events, many with free entry, at venues around Scarborough.
The campus will host a performance
of The Making of Bull by Stacy Makishi and a workshop
by the same artist in conjunction with Coastival and the
Scarborough Literature Festival.
Students and recent graduates from the
University’s Scarborough School of Arts and New Media are
performing and volunteering at the festival. Second-year Theatre
and Performance students are showcasing their talents in The Charm
Collectors, and a group of graduates from 2011 will perform as the
Lost Property Theatre company.
Creative Music Technology lecturer, Dr Rob Mackay,
has created a sound piece for the Sea Swim exhibition at Woodend
which will be officially opened as part of the Coastival festival.
The Arts Council-funded exhibition will later be shown at the
Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA).
The University is also a Coastival
sponsor.
<Maria Chatzichristodoulou
Maria Chatzichristodoulou, Theatre and Performance lecturer at
the University said: “Coastival offers our students an excellent
opportunity to present their work and get hands-on experience at a
well-respected arts festival happening on their doorstep.”
More information about Coastival, including
times and ticket details, is available on the Coastival website.
