Research in the Department of Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences is a
dynamic, interactive and interdisciplinary environment for
research.
Our research is structured around four
major research themes:
We also work alongside the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal
Studies (IECS)

Research on Invasive Alien Species
(IAS) is a cross cutting theme across Evolutionary Biology,
Ecology, HIFI and IECS, with members of these groups working on
diverse species from harlequin ladybirds to signal crayfish
(pictured left).
We’ve invested in extensive modern research facilities for
genome analysis, bioinformatics and chemical analysis of biological
systems. We also have freshwater and marine aquaria.
Our exceptional facilities allow us to carry out world leading
research. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 55% of our
research was rated as internationally recognised and 15% as
internationally excellent or world leading.
We also have a thriving community of postgraduate students who
benefit from our extensive research training co-ordinated through
the University's Postgraduate Training Scheme and Graduate
School.
