About us
Virtually all aspects of modern life are affected by engineering
and technology. Cars, aircraft and computers are obvious examples,
but it is easy to forget that other things – such as the packaging
of the food we eat and the ways we communicate – depend on
engineering and technological expertise.
Building on our excellent reputation in Electronic, Mechanical
and Computer-aided Engineering, we are delighted to introduce a new
discipline to our broad teaching and research portfolio – Chemical
Engineering.
The Department of Engineering is proud of its excellent
reputation. In the 2010 National Student Survey, we ranked 8th in
the UK for Electronic and Electrical Engineering and 11th for
Mechanical Based Engineering*.
We offer a variety of courses in electronic, mechanical and
computer-aided engineering. Specialist programmes in product
innovation, design and technology, electrical engineering and
medical product design are also available. All of our courses are
accredited as appropriate by the IET, the IMechE and soon the
IED.
Our students benefit from a range of facilities including rapid
manufacturing technologies, circuit board manufacture, scanning
electron microscopy as well as hands-on experience of working in
our electronic labs and mechanical workshop. Students study their
specialist subject alongside staff and students from a variety of
disciplines, reflecting the complex mix of technologies found in
today’s most advanced products and systems.
Around 40% of the UK’s economy depends on engineering or
technology, so our graduates enjoy some of the best job prospects
and highest salaries. Many of our graduates go on to work for large
national and international companies such as BP Chemicals, Formula
One Management and DHL.
We’re also involved in international quality research. In the
latest Research Assessment Exercise, 95% of our research was rated
international quality. Our interests focus on the environment,
energy and sensors, medical engineering and design, materials and
process performance.
It doesn’t stop there. Our research is incorporated into our
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to provide our students
with the latest knowledge in their fields.
