Department of Geography

The Department of Geography offers superb teaching, first-class facilities and excellent employment prospects.

Don’t just take our word for it. In the 2011 National Student Survey, 98% of full-time students taking physical geography programmes were satisfied with their course. Furthermore, 94% of those taking human geography programmes expressed satisfaction. Overall, Geographical Studies scored an impressive 97% approval, placing us within the top 10 departments.

We’re based in Cohen, a grade two-listed building that’s part of the university’s conservation area, and have world-class teaching labs.

Fieldwork is a big part of our programmes. We arrange trips to countries that have in recent years included Spain, Italy, Iceland, The United States, Malta.

Closer to home we also study Yorkshire’s moors and Hull’s regeneration projects.

We’re a medium-sized department with more than 20 lecturers, 300 undergraduates and a network of Masters and PhD students.

What else do we offer?

We have a leading research department – the 2008 RAE results showed 90% of our research was of international standard – and the vast majority of our graduates start work or further study soon after they leave us.

We also help schools and the community by organising geography masterclasses that offer pupils a taste of life as an undergraduate.
