Research postgraduate opportunities – PhDs and MPhils

We are one of the UK’s leading centres for geographical research. We were awarded a 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), and 55% 3* and 4* quality in RAE 2008, which shows our research is internationally important.

All our staff are researchers, so we can supervise a wide range of topics. But as a medium-sized department we’re still small enough to be welcoming.

Our postgraduates have access to award-winning research training, dedicated desktop PCs and excellent facilities.

Our three-year PhD programmes prepare you for academic, research and other high-level careers.

What are my other options?

If you don’t want to commit three years to a project, our one-year Masters by research degrees could be what you’re looking for. They allow you to study without committing to a full PhD programme.

Our Masters in Reseach (MRes) degree is a specialist research-training Masters that’s recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council. It will prepare you for PhD research.
