Postgraduate research studentship
Department of Physical Sciences – PHYSICS
Project: Semiconductor transport theory and
simulation.
An Office of Naval Research (ONR) funded PhD
studentship is available to investigate semiconductor transport for
TeraHertz (THz) devices within the Theory and Modelling Group under
the supervision of Dr Angela Dyson. The candidate will use and
extensively modify the groups existing semiconductor Monte Carlo
code. The research will cover various aspects of high field
transport including negative-differential-resistance, quantization
of carriers, hot carriers and plasmon-phonon coupled modes. The
work will be carried out using one or more of the group's 8 core
machines; access to multi-node clusters is also available.
The project is a collaborative effort with Prof B.K. Ridley FRS of
Essex University.
The preferred start date is September 2012,
although other dates could be accommodated if need be. Applicants
should have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class BSc
or MPhys degree in Physics. Candidates should have either good
programming skills or a strong background in semiconductor devices;
both would be an advantage.
The studentship covers the cost of UK/EU fees
and includes a stipend of £13,590 per annum (tax free) plus
additional income from teaching. As the funding comes from an
external body and is paid annually, continuation of the position is
subject to outstanding funds arriving from ONR. However, no
problems are anticipated.
The closing date for applications is the
16th of April, 2012. Application forms, which can be
downloaded from the site shown below or obtained from the
