What our students say
Sarah Hollins, BSc Psychology, 2012
My
experience at Hull was fantastic, I couldn’t have wished for a
better department to be a part of! There’s a real range of
lecturers with expertise in different psychological areas which
means you develop interests you wouldn’t expect. The lecturers are
also all really friendly and approachable and happy to help you if
you have questions or problems. The University itself has some
fantastic facilities (with the students union voted best in the
country this year) and is always striving to get even better. I was
really sad to leave Hull but left with a passion for Psychology. I
am going on to do a Masters in Health Psychology at Leeds
University in September. You would not regret choosing to study at
Hull!
Daniella Dewson, BSc Psychology, 2011
"During my time at the University of Hull
studying Psychology, I found the teaching to be excellent. The
lecturers had the academic and research background in their field
as well as the practical experience to support their teaching. The
programme gave insight into various areas of Psychology allowing me
to specialise in my final year. I found the lecturers to be very
approachable and the support provided by my ‘Third Year Project
Supervisor’ was indispensible. Facilities in University appear
constantly to be updated."
"I particularly enjoyed studying my chosen modules, including
Educational Psychology, Reading and Memory Development and
Educational testing, which related to my plans of becoming a
Teacher. These chosen modules particularly helped me to gain a
place on the Primary PGCE at Hull, which I have completed; I start
a full time position in September."
"I believe that my Psychology degree will contribute to my aim
of taking on the role of a SENCO in the near future. This may
eventually lead onto a Doctorate in Educational Psychology. This
would not be achievable without the support I received whilst
studying Psychology at the University of Hull."
Jocelyn Armitage, Trainee Clinical Psychologist
"As an excited A-level student trying to decide which university
to choose for a psychology degree, Hull immediately stood out. Of
all the universities I visited, Hull’s attractive campus, pleasant
and affordable accommodation, and friendly reputation had great
appeal. The psychology course looked fascinating and varied and at
the open day the staff gave an immediate impression of genuine
interest in us, the students, rather than exclusively their own
research, as seemed the case at some other universities. On top of
this, I wanted to pursue a career as a clinical psychologist, and
Hull is the only place in the country which offers a clinical
doctorate course integrated with the undergraduate psychology
degree."
"My high expectations were reached and exceeded. The course gave
me a well-grounded knowledge base in psychological theory while
also allowing me to develop more specific interests through the
wide range of modules available and through my third year research
project. The department always seemed well organised, the library
was well-stocked, and I found both staff and students to be very
supportive. Campus was always a place of fun and relaxation as well
as work, and I enjoyed chatting with friends after lectures in the
cafes and bar, and taking part in the vast range of societies and
sports clubs made available through the proactive student-run
students’ union. Now still at Hull and training as a clinical
psychologist, I look back on my undergraduate days only with great
fondness and with many happy memories."
Emily Robertson, Psychology Graduate
"I chose to study Psychology at Hull primarily because of the
course content, but also due to the reputation it holds of being a
friendly and approachable establishment. It did not disappoint.
Throughout the three years we covered some fascinating topics and I
received all the support and encouragement I could hope for from
the lecturers. They were very approachable and supportive, as well
as enthusiastic, and each was inspiring in their own unique way. As
a new (and somewhat nervous!) student I immediately felt at home,
meeting and making friends with students from all walks of life,
some of whom I am still in touch with now."
"The course triggered my interest to study for a Masters degree
in Forensic Psychology, for which I have applied and hope to begin
next September. I would never have dreamt of doing a Masters
before, but studying at Hull boosted my confidence, and the course
gave me a thirst to study Psychology further. If I complete this
course successfully, I am hoping to work within the Police force or
Probation service. My decision to study at Hull was one of the best
choices I have ever made and I will never regret it. In fact, I
would be more than happy to go back and live it all over
again!"
Nicholas Buckley, Psychology Undergraduate
"I decided to study Psychology with Counselling at Hull
University for a number of different reasons. The modules it had to
offer was very attractive as a number of subjects went more in
depth from topics previously studied at A Level. Another reason was
that I was informed on an open day that the Psychology Department
was one of the longest established ones across the UK, which I
found quite impressive. A final reason I decided to come here was
how friendly it was both on the open day and around "the lawns"
tour I had - a place of student accommodation situated in the
village of Cottingham. As I go into my third and final year, I look
back and have no regrets whatsoever on the priceless experience
I've acquired at the University of Hull. In terms of academic and
social prospects, you are never short of anything to do and I
definitely recommend this University to you, the potential
students!"
Richard Nakielny, Psychology Undergraduate
"My time at Hull so far has been a thoroughly enjoyable
experience. I have met a great variety of people, not only through
the Psychology department, but through University life as well. The
staff in the Psychology department have been very supportive during
my time here and, considering I hadn’t studied psychology before,
have made the subject very accessible and fascinating. Overall, I
would strongly recommend coming to Hull to study Psychology; you
will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge in many areas, in
an encouraging and inspiring environment."
Lucy Blair, Personal Assistant
"The thing I loved most about studying at Hull was the people.
The people on the course, around campus and halls were all
fantastic, welcoming and understanding! The reason I chose Hull to
study Psychology was because of the amazing courses, and career
prospects. Although I chose not to continue with psychology for the
time being I am definitely going back there to do my Masters at
some point in the future! I loved every minute!"
Rachel Stamper, Learning Support Assistant
"I knew I wanted to study psychology from one of my first A
Level lessons, the subject just fascinated me, especially social
psychology; and I spent an amazing three years studying single
honours psychology at Hull. The psychology department provided me
with a wealth of support and inspiration. The staff are so
passionate about their research and about sharing their knowledge
with the students, and their enthusiasm is infectious. I will be
starting a PGCE secondary course in September 2007 to teach
mathematics, and I hope to teach psychology at A Level."
"I actually ended up at Hull through clearing, and have never
looked back since. The university campus itself is always full of
people going from one place to the other, or just relaxing, so
you’re guaranteed to run into someone whenever you’re on campus.
Everyone is so friendly that you can meet new people any day of the
week. The student union is definitely one of the places where
people love to go; you can listen to the union radio station, JAM
1575 or just have a few drinks with friends in the Sanctuary bar.
Going beyond the campus, Hull is a fantastic city for students.
There’s always something to do, and it’s not too expensive either,
which is great news for the student budget! Hull is definitely one
of those universities that really cares about its students."
