Field schools

Are you interested in getting involved in archaeological fieldwork but you are not a student at the University of Hull? Then the Brodsworth Community Archaeology Project may be for you.

Students out on the field at Brodsworth archaeological field school

The Brodsworth Community Archaeology Project has been running for over 10 years as a field course for students for the Universities of Hull and Sheffield and as a community archaeology project, and we also welcome applications from other individuals.

Brodsworth Field School is designed to provide participants with an introduction to and experience of modern archaeological field skills. It is primarily based on 'hands on' field teaching and experience but will also involve taught 'class room' elements as an introduction to the practical elements.

The 2014 fieldwork plans

The work planned in each season is always provisional until the fieldwork starts as it depends on the harvesting of crops and the availability of land to investigate.

As well as continuing the field walking and geophysical survey of areas around the study region, several areas of excavations and test pitting will be carried out.

During the 2014 season it is hoped to:

  • Excavation at the site of an enclosure near Scabba Wood
  • Geophysical survey of a number of enclosures near High Melton
  • Excavation at St Helen’s Chapel, Barnburgh
  • Excavations at Wildthrope Deserted Medieval Village
