International students

A warm welcome from the Director and staff of the Careers Service.

The Careers Service aims to support students and graduates in achieving their career plans and works with students to develop their employability at the earliest opportunity.

Most of the Careers Service website is as directly relevant to you if you are an international student as to UK and EU students. However, this section will provide careers related information that may be of specific interest to you.

Whilst we work with academic departments to organise suitable events, such as workshops and employer presentations, you are advised to come to the Careers Service to find out the range of information, support and opportunities available to you.  We are located on the third floor of University House on the Hull campus and in the Library Area of the Scarborough campus.

You may also get advice and support from the University’s International Office, based at the Dennison Centre on Cottingham Road.

Working during your Studies

If you wish to work in the UK during your studies you should consult the UKCISA website to check the regulations which apply to you.

If you are a European Economic Area (EEA) or Swiss national, consult the relevant section of the UKCISA website.

To find a part-time job during your studies, or vacation work, go to the Job Shop on the first floor of University House or visit the Job Shop website.(Link below).

Look also for professional or industrial work placements offered by employers during the summer vacation, as these can provide relevant work experience, networking opportunities and the chance to develop employability skills.

Jobs - Careers Service jobs page - has some placements.

Work experience - links to job search including professional placements (e.g. summer placements, one-year 'sandwich' placements)

Working in the UK after your studies

If you wish to work in the UK after your studies you should consult the UKCISA website to check the regulations which apply. For further information about visas and studying in the UK, consult the UK Border Agency (UKBA) website.

Career planning and research opportunities

Discuss you career ideas with a Careers Adviser at an early stage. You may be able to choose course options, undertake work experience or develop extra-curricular activities which will help you when applying for jobs or for further study. There are specialists websites for international students interested in particular occupations, e.g. LawBrittania for legal careers in the UK.

Attend careers events (see under Events on the left hand menu) to obtain information about recruitment procedures and employers.

When filling in application forms and producing your CV, UK NARIC may be able to help you with comparability of qualifications. A link to the NARIC website is available below.

When identifying suitable jobs to apply for, look for those that can use your specific background and skills, i.e. where knowledge of your country of origin or language would be of particular value, and bring these out in applications and interviews.

If you wish to continue to further study in the UK, then postgraduate course information can be obtained from the Further study section of this website. The British Council website can be consulted for sources of funding for international students.
