Internships and
Placements
- Work experience can significantly enhance your
prospects of getting a graduate job at the end of your current
studies. It also provides an opportunity for you
to gain skills and test out occupations of interest without
commiting yourself to a long-term job.
- Many employers offer work placements so that they can test out
candidates, and a high number of placements result in longer term
job offers, so be prepared for thorough recruitment and selection
processes.
- Employers advertise well in advance, so plan ahead and be
ready to apply several months before the placement start
date.
- Don't forget that placement opportunities are also advertised
via the jobs page.

not create your own opportunities?
Not all work experience opportunities will be
advertised. Consider a more direct approach to
employers to generate opportunities or make speculative
enquiries/applications. Use any contacts you make have, such as
friends or family.
Volunteer - volunteering is also a useful
way to develop skills and gain experience. Find out

What is the difference between a
work placement and an internship?
We tend to use both terms for the same thing. Both refer to a
period of work experience with an employer. Some are paid and some
are unpaid. Most of those featured on this page are paid
opportunities.

opportunities.
