What is Counselling?

Counselling provides a safe place, separate from your daily life, where you can explore issues or feelings which are causing you difficulty.

The counsellor will aim to relate to you in a supportive and purposeful manner and assist you in the task of finding your own way forward.

Your use of counselling remains confidential to the service within the limits agreed with your counsellor. Counselling for students is free and provided by professional, trained, qualified counsellors.

Further details on confidentiality are set out on our information for clients page.

What Does Student Counselling Offer?

Counselling sessions are usually last up to fifty minutes. The counsellor will meet with you on your own to talk through your concerns. Your first full appointment will be an assessment session. This session will help us to decide with you whether counselling is appropriate for you. If counselling is appropriate, you are most likely to be offered a further four sessions. It may be possible to extend this offer if, with you we reach that decision.

Drop-In Sessions

Drop-In sessions are available on the Hull campus (not at Scarborough) between 12noon and 1pm every weekday during semester. A counsellor can see you for a brief consultation. You do not need to make an appointment to use the Drop In.

E-mail and Telephone Counselling Support

We can provide a level of support for students who are unable to attend in person using either e-mail or telephone.

How can I contact Student Counselling?

Contact us by e-mail: studentcounselling@hull.ac.uk or telephone: 01482 465166 (with answerphone - and we can phone you back.) or in person at 138 Cottingham Road

What issues do students bring to counselling?

Well, anything and everything! People talk about many different issues in counselling sessions. Typical examples include: difficult thoughts, feelings or behaviours (their own or other's); responses to recent or past events and experiences; relationship struggles; making decisions; academic or personal concerns.

Your concern may not fall into these categories but if it is causing you distress or difficulty, you are welcome to come and talk to a counsellor.
