The History of the Graduate School
The Graduate School was opened on 1st August 2002, as a
successor to the Graduate Research Institute (GRI). It is one of
the most modern buildings on the Hull Campus, having been converted
from previous usage in 1996.
When opened as the GRI in 1996 its purpose was to provide a
central hub for all research students. It offered a place to work
and and a place to socialise and network. It also housed the staff
responsible for administering the newly introduced and
ground-breaking Postgraduate Training Scheme (PGTS).
In 2002 it expanded its remit to provide administrative support
for research students and staff from Student Administrative
Services (SAS) were transferred to provide this service. At this
time, it was renamed the Graduate School.
In 2007 the Graduate School opened its doors to postgraduate
taught students for the first time, allowing them use of its
facilities though administrative support remained with SAS.
The Graduate School has fared extremely well in student surveys
and received the top ranking in the 2008 International Student
Barometer.
