Frequently Asked Questions
Am I eligible to attend a degree
ceremony?
A brochure is sent to all students who may be
eligible to graduate in July 2012. You will only be allowed to
graduate if your name appears on an official pass list and you have
no outstanding debts to the University.
When and where is my graduation ceremony taking
place?
All Hull Campus graduation ceremonies will take place at
the City Hall in Hull city centre. Ceremony dates and times
for each faculty/school can be found on the graduation dates page.
I
can’t make the date of my graduation – can I swap to a different
day?
If you cannot make the date of your graduation ceremony
this summer, unfortunately you will not be able to swap to a
different day as the ceremonies are specific to particular
faculties and departments. You have two options: you
can either graduate in absentia or defer to
the winter ceremonies, which take place on 24 and 25
January 2013 on Hull campus (these dates still need to be
confirmed).

What if my plans change and I can’t attend my
graduation ceremony?
Please contact Student Administrative Services
(Graduation) immediately. Students can either graduate in absentia
(certificates will be posted to you after the ceremony) or defer
their graduation to the winter ceremonies on 24 and 25
January 2013 (see above). If you choose to defer to a
different ceremony, you will not receive your certificate until the
date of this ceremony as the certificate includes your
graduation date.
My friend has not received a
graduation information booklet. Can I let them have
mine?
Please do not pass on this booklet to other people – there may
be a good reason why they have not received one.
Is there anything I need to do in
preparation for my graduation?
You need to do the following:
- Check that your name is recorded correctly on the Student
Portal – inform your department immediately if there are any
errors. Please note: names can only be amended before the formal
approval of your award.
- Return your reply form to Student Administrative Services
(Graduation), confirming your attendance at the ceremony for your
department and faculty. The closing date for replies is 4 May 2012.
Postgraduate students may have been given a later closing date, but
this will be indicated on the reply form,
- Hire or purchase your gown from Ede & Ravenscroft.
- Book your celebration lunches.

How many guests can I bring?
You will automatically be allocated two guest
tickets. If you want to bring extra guests, you can request tickets
on the reply form. Once all reply forms have been received, extra
guest tickets will be allocated as fairly as possible and sent out
with the basic allocation. However, it is not expected that
there will be many extra tickets available at any of the
ceremonies. Please do not make travel or accommodation arrangements
for extra guests unless you have definitely been allocated tickets
for them.
Guests will only be admitted to any of the graduation ceremonies
on production of a valid guest ticket for that ceremony. Once the
ceremony has started, guests are requested not to leave their
seats. We also ask that guests do not take flash photographs during
the ceremony.
For the benefit of those unable to attend,
please note that we hope to show each ceremony live on the day via
webcam. You would be able to view the ceremony by visiting the
University website.
I'm (or a member of my graduation party is)
disabled – what should I do?
Please provide details on your reply form or contact Student Administrative Services
if you or any of your guests have specific
seating requirements, eg. wheelchair user or mobility
difficulties. Students with mobility disabilities may be seated on
the platform.
It is important to contact us in advance of your ceremony
before guest tickets are issued to ensure any specific seating
arrangements are taken into consideration when tickets are
allocated.

When should I expect my tickets to
arrive?
Tickets will be posted on 20 June 2012 to the
UK address that you provide on the reply form. If you live overseas
and cannot provide a UK address, you will need to collect your
tickets from Student Administrative Services (Graduation) in
University House between 28 June and 6 July 2012, or collect them
from the Student Reception Desk at the City Hall on the day of your
ceremony.
Please note that guest tickets are
non-transferable and cannot be given to friends. If you no longer
require them, please return them to Student Administrative Services
(Graduation) as soon as possible.
I'm not sure if I have any outstanding debts to
the University, should I check?
Yes – if you have any outstanding debts to the
University on 1 June 2012, you will not be permitted to graduate.
If you have a debt and have already told us that you are attending,
you will receive a letter from Student Financial Services informing
you that you must clear your debts before you can graduate. Student
Financial Services can be contacted on 01482 465674 or 466362.
