Academic Dress: Gowns/Robes Hoods and
Caps
The University Silk
The distinguishing feature of the University of Hull academic
dress is 'the single silk system' (i.e., one special silk –
turquoise blue taffeta), which lines every hood and faces the
sleeves and fronts of all Doctorate robes.

Undergraduate Certificates including
the undergraduate Certificate in Education and those attending the
Faculty of Health and Social Care annual ceremony held in July wear
a black gown of the undergraduate
pattern.
Undergraduate certificate hoods are
black with a cowl edge faced inside with 1" turquoise ribbon.
The caps worn are square, of the mortar-board
pattern, of black cloth with black silk tassel.

Undergraduate Diplomas including the
undergraduate Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and
those attending the Faculty of Health and Social Care annual
ceremony held in July wear a black gown of the
undergraduate pattern.
Undergraduate Diploma hoods are black,
but of a different pattern (deposited with the Robemakers) from
those of the Bachelors and are fully lined with the University silk
- turquoise blue taffeta. The caps worn are
square, of the mortar-board pattern, of black cloth with black silk
tassel (see picture below).
Foundation Degrees wear a
black gown of the undergraduate pattern and the
undergraduate Diploma hood, as described
above. The caps worn are square, of the
mortar-board pattern, of black cloth with black silk tassel.

Bachelors wear a black
gown of the Oxford BA pattern, the sleeves are looped and
gathered at the elbow but the point of the sleeves does not come
below the knee.
Bachelor hoods are black, of the
improved Oxford MA Burgon type and, as with all hoods, fully lined
with the University silk - turquoise blue taffeta. The caps worn
are square, of the mortar-board pattern, of black cloth with black
silk tassel (see pictures below).

Postgraduate Certificates in Education
in full dress wear the Master's black robe with a simple shaped
black hood, fully lined with turquoise blue silk.
The caps worn are square, of the mortar-board
pattern, of black cloth with black silk tassel.

First Degree Masters (undergraduate
Masters) wear the Bachelors' black
gown.
First Degree Masters wear the Masters' hood
which is black, of the London MA type and, as with all hoods, fully
lined with the University silk - turquoise blue taffeta. The yoke
of the Masters' hood is square and edged with the University
silk.
The caps worn are square, of the mortar-board
pattern, of black cloth with black silk tassel.

Masters (other than Masters of Music)
wear a black gown of the Oxford MA pattern.
Masters' hoods are black and, as with
all hoods, are fully lined with the University silk - blue taffeta.

Masters of Music wear a black
gown of the same pattern as the Oxford BMus gown. It has a
flap collar trimmed with one row of silk gimp with inverted T- type
sleeve slits trimmed with one row of the same silk gimp and with
one panel of silk gimp towards the bottom of each sleeve.
The Masters of Music hood is cream
silk brocade, of the same pattern as the Bachelors, and fully lined
with the University silk - turquoise blue taffeta.
Masters' caps are square, of the
mortar-board pattern, of black cloth with black silk tassel.

All Doctorates
(except Doctors of Music) in full dress wear a robe of
claret-coloured cloth of the Oxford Doctors' pattern, the
sleeves are of the University silk and the fronts are faced with
the same silk.
The Doctorate hood is claret coloured
cloth of the Oxford Doctors' type and fully lined with the
University silk.
Doctorate caps are round of black
cloth with cord and tassels which are the same colour as the
robe.

Doctors of Music in full dress wear a
festal robe of figured cream silk brocade (or
damask silk) of the same pattern as the Doctorates, the sleeves are
of the University silk and the fronts are faced with the same
silk.
The Doctors of Music hood is of cream
silk brocade (figured damask silk) of the Oxford Doctors' type and
fully lined with the University silk.
The caps worn are round of black cloth with
cord and tassels which are the same colour as the robe.

Higher Doctorates in full dress and
Honorary Doctorates wear a festal robe of
scarlet superfine cloth of the same pattern as the Doctorates, the
sleeves are faced in the University silk and the fronts are faced
with the same silk.
The Higher Doctorates' hood is of
scarlet superfine cloth of the Oxford Doctors' type and fully lined
with the University silk. Higher Doctorates (except Doctors of
Divinity) wear a tudor bonnet of black velvet cord
and tassels of the colour of the robe.
Doctors of Divinity in full dress wear
soft square caps of black velvet without tuft or tassel (the
Cranmer cap) and fully lined with scarlet silk.

Undergraduates and Masters wear Black Hull University gowns at

BMedSci
Candidates wear a black gown of the undergraduate pattern with a
black hood fully lined with turquoise blue silk, cowl edge faced
inside with dark blue silk. The caps worn are
square, of the mortar-board pattern, of black cloth with black silk
tassel.

Candidates wear a black gown of the undergraduate pattern with a
black hood fully lined with dark blue silk, cowl edge faced
inside with turquoise blue silk. The
caps worn are square, of the mortar-board pattern,
of black cloth with black silk tassel.

Masters wear a black Hull Masters postgraduate gown. The hood is
full shaped with a black outer, fully lined with orange and faced
inside cowl edge with turquoise blue. The cape edge is faced
outside with dark blue and the neck band is black bound with
turquoise blue on the top edge and dark blue on the bottom edge.
The caps worn are square, of the mortar-board pattern, of black
cloth with black silk tassel.

MPhil (Research Masters)
Master of Philosophy wear a black Hull Masters postgraduate
gown. The hood is a full shape with maroon outer lining and bound
with dark blue. The inside cowl edge is faced with turquoise blue
and the neck band is bound with maroon with turquoise blue on the
top edge and dark blue on the bottom edge. The caps worn are
square, of the mortar-board pattern, of black cloth with black silk
tassel.

PhD (Research Doctorates)
Doctorates wear a maroon gown with facings of dark blue and
orange and sleeves faced with dark blue and top edged with orange.
The hood is full shape with a maroon outer, fully lined and bound
with dark blue. The cowl edge is faced inside with turquoise blue
and maroon and the neck band maroon bound with turquoise blue on
the top edge and dark blue on the bottom edge. The cap is a maroon
bonnet with turquoise blue cord and tassels.

MD (Taught Doctorates)
Doctorates wear a dark blue gown with facings of turquoise blue
and orange and sleeves faced with turquoise blue and top edged with
orange. The hood is full shape with a dark blue outer, fully lined
and bound with turquoise blue. The cowl edge is faced inside with
orange and the neck band is bound with dark blue with orange on the
top edge and turquoise blue on the bottom edge. The cap is a dark
blue cloth bonnet with turquoise blue cord and tassels.
