Accommodation support
The University recognises that life in its residences is an
important part of the educational experience of its students. There
is a strong commitment to pastoral support - staff, in various
residential and non-residential roles, encourage safe, secure and
peaceful regimes. Discreet support for students, whether practical
or emotional, is also provided.
- Needler and Thwaite Halls
comprise a Warden, Deputy Warden and two Assistant
Wardens.
- Each Lawns Hall has a resident Warden,
Assistant Warden and a student Senior Resident.
- University Owned and Taylor Court
Flats' pastoral support is provided by non-resident staff
tutors who visit occasionally.
- A similar system operates in the Head Leasing Scheme's
accommodation, where staff visit properties on a regular
basis and have responsibility for general management, domestic
arrangements and pastoral matters, liaising with each nominated
house representative.
- There is a minimum of direct individual supervision.
Regulations are designed to protect the privacy and well-being of
the group concerned. Wardens, tutors and Accommodation Office staff
are available for consultation and advice.
- It must be recognised that the University provides adult
education and its students are legally adults (with rare
exceptions). Pastoral staff do not provide the same level of care
as a parent. The University's policy for under-18s on arrival is
that they must live in one of the halls of residence, where there
is resident pastoral staff in loco parentis.
- Other sources of confidential help are available within and
outside the University. Details are published by the University's
Student Support Services Office and the Students' Union.
