Needler Hall

A traditional, 18th century country house on attractive grounds close to Cottingham village shops and social amenities, Needler Hall is only 2.5 miles from the University campus and bus services are frequent. A relaxed and comfortable setting is provided for 167 students in single rooms.

What are the features?

  • ‘Old Wing' rooms have wash basins
  • ‘New Wing' rooms don't have wash basins and are smaller
  • Telephones - pre-paid voucher operation (some internal calls are free/external calls are charged at ‘phone-box' rates for calls within the UK)
  • Residents can use campus computing facilities for internet and network access from their bedrooms, provided they have a suitable PC and a modem
  • Students who don't bring a computer can use the computer studio in the hall
  • Personal possessions/contents insurance included
  • Semi-catered - evening meals are provided daily
  • Non-specialised vegetarian meals available
  • Special arrangements for missed evening meals can be made


What are the shared facilities?

  • Common room providing a quiet study environment
  • Two common rooms, each with television
  • Pool and table tennis tables
  • Two music practice rooms each with a piano
  • Computer studio
  • Kitchenette with a variety of equipment (including kettle, fridge, microwave oven, mini-oven and grill)
  • Bathrooms and toilets
  • Laundry with card-operated washing machines and tumble dryers
  • Irons and ironing boards
  • Large Bicycle shed
  • Limited car parking
  • Students are asked to bring their own bed linen, snack-preparation and eating utensils

A distinctive feature of traditional halls is the JCR (Junior Common Room) committee, which is a body elected by students yearly who:

  • organises regular social events, such as five a side football matches, DVD screenings, trips, quizzes and special evenings at Christmas and summer.
  • assists in running the hall, hosting regular meetings for residents to voice opinions and contribute to hall life

Residents pay a fee towards maintenance and facility-licensing.


The Contract

Needler Hall is closed during the Christmas vacation period, and students must vacate the premises.
