Policies
Policy on the Allocation of Places and Shared
Rooms
The University of Hull currently provides accommodation
for a total of 2,600 single students - 1360 in The
Lawns, 900 in self-catering Student Houses, 288 in Taylor
Court flats, about 160 in Head Leased flats and houses managed by
the University, plus a large portfolio of private accommodation
with The Scheme.
In the halls, places are allocated equally between the sexes.
Some halls have single-sex areas, while others use a semi-random
allocation. Many houses are mixed, but some single-sex properties
are also available. Please specify if a single-sex house/flat is
desired on the residence application form.
Our accommodation enables people from a wide variety of
backgrounds to learn from one another. Applicants need to be
agreeable to living as an integrated, tolerant and cooperative
community.
Students with cultural, religious, medical, dietary, or other
requirements should decide if a mixed environment could pose
difficulties. In self-catering properties, there are likely to be
diets and stores of foodstuffs that include meat, (e.g., pork) and
alcoholic drinks. Refrigerators, cooking utensils, dining/kitchen
areas cannot be split.
Places are allocated taking into account the following
factors:
- 1. Disabled
students
- 2. New
undergraduates and Undergraduate students from overseas
- 3.
Postgraduates
- 4. Exchange
students
- 5. Continuing UK and
EU undergraduates
1. Disabled Students and those with declared and
medically-certified health problems are given first priority as
appropriate. We endeavour to integrate students
with disabilities within our general student community.
Adapted accommodation includes:
Student Houses
Seven fully adapted, en-suite, study bedrooms in housesLocated
adjacent to campus are three Student Houses, two comprising a
self-contained flatlet specifically designed for a student that
uses a wheelchair, and the third having ramped access, en-suite
facilities and communal kitchen. There are also ramped approaches
to several of the ground floor flats at Taylor Court.
At Needler Hall, rooms and bathrooms have been converted for use
by students with mobility difficulties. Needler Hall and a
campus-area Student House have special facilities for students that
are visually-impaired and are accompanied by a guide dog.
Several halls of residence, student houses and a Taylor Court flat
have a'Deaf Alerter' system installed.
Students with specific needs (for example arising from
physical or mental health difficulty) requiring University
accommodation are asked to contact the Accommodation Office as soon
as they accept an offer (firmly or provisionally).
Undergraduate students - a stock
of accommodation is reserved for new and continuing unaccompanied
undergraduate students. Students admitted during the later stages
of our accommodation admissions procedure, normally after 1
September 2009, are advised that available options become fewer and
fewer over time until our stock is fully let. If demand exceeds our
capacity, those whom we cannot permanently accommodate on arrival
will be offered several residence options, normally on a first come
first served basis, including the use of a temporary (fold-up bed)
as a third person in a shared room at the Lawns with an exception
but not a guarantee that in a typical year the Univesity will
accommodate this group of students in vacancies arising within the
first two weeks of session. Students who cannot be accommodated
will be directed to our Head-Leased accommodation or to a private
landlord registered with 'The Scheme'.
Postgraduate students - a stock of
accommodation has been reserved for their use in the Taylor Court
Flats and our close-to-campus Student Houses. Postgraduate students
wishing to secure a room prior to arrival should pay a £150 deposit
using the online facility (see the How to Apply section). Those
students unable to pay a deposit should complete and return the
application form where it will be held by the Accommodation Office
until your arrival, at which point you will be allocated
accommodation on a first come, first served basis. In the event
that the number of students in this category exceeds the places
reserved, those arriving after all available places have been let
will be assisted in finding head-leased or private accommodation
with 'The Scheme'.
Exchange students - a limited number
of rooms in the Student Houses are reserved to meet the expected
demand rooms from exchange students (both full-session and
single-semester applicants). In the event of demand exceeding
supply, students will be directed to alternative accommodation
within the private sector.
Continuing students - a limited number
of places are reserved for use by this group. Demand usually
exceeds the number of places available.
Unfortunately we are unable to provide accommodation for the
following:
Students with children, expectant mothers or students
accompanied by their family.
Part-time or non-registered students - The
University regrets that it is unable to provide accommodation for
part-time and non-registered students. Private sector residence is
recommended. Council tax implications need to be taken into
account.
Married couples - accommodation provided by the
University is designed for single unaccompanied students. Married
couples may prefer to set up home in the private sector.
Factors to take into consideration:
Local students - students whose homes are within commuting
distance of the University campus are invited to contact the
Accommodation Office for information and advice if they wish to
take up University residence. Please note: local students will be
held liable for residence fees if, after accepting the residence
contract, they return back to the 'family home', unless the
Accommodation Office is able to re-let the room.
Mature students - The residential environment
preferred by mature students can be different from that which is
enjoyed by younger undergraduates. General hall life is usually
unsuitable, though some may wish to apply for Assistant Warden
Posts. Places in Student Houses and several Taylor Court Flats have
been reserved to provide accommodation for mature students,
dependent on demand.
- Students in the Department of Drama often work irregular hours,
including evenings.
- Students of the Hull-York Medical School may be required to
attend phases of tuition/work observation in the evenings.
- New Nursing students - course requirements have been proven to
be best suited to the self-catering environment and the longer
contracts offered at the Student Houses and the Taylor Court Flats.
Where a hall location is desired, it is advised that an application
be made only for a place in one of The Nicholson Hall bungalows,
which operate on a longer contract than that of a standard Hall of
Residence. Nursing students are advised that Clinical placements
will not exempt them from liability for residence fees. Any
placements made by the Department will be supported by public
transport facilities.
- Studying away from Hull - students who are required to spend a
year away as part of their course (for example language students
studying abroad or students on industrial placements) are asked to
contact the Accommodation Office in December if they are due to
return the following September for accommodation advice.
