Policies
Policy on the Allocation of Places
The University of Hull@Scarborough currently provides
University-owned/managed accommodation for approximately 400 single
students - 213 in Cayley Halls of Residence, and 200 in
University-managed shared student houses. There's also a good
selection of private sector accommodation registered with the
University as well.
In Cayley Hall and managed accommodation places will be
allocated with a mixture of male and femaile students on all
floors. Some of the smaller properties may be designated for mature
and/or postgraduate students.
Our accommodation is provided to benefit as many new students as
possible. Applicants for our residences need to be aware that
they will be living together as an intergrated tolerant and
co-operative community. Students who have cultural,
religious, medical, dietary or other requirements need to make
a decision before applying for a place
in University accommodation as to whether or
not this mixed environment may pose difficulties for them. In
self-catering accommodation some students' diets and stores of food
stuffs are likely to include meat, including pork, and alcoholic
drinks. Seperate fridge/freezers, kitchen and dining areas ar
not available for residents preferring to operate in isolation from
the general resident community.
Places in our accommodation are allocated in accordance with
the following list of priorities:
- 1. Students with
disability
- 2. New
undergraduate students
- 3. Continuing
undergraduate students from overseas
- 4. Postgraduate students from
overseas
- 5. New postgraduate students
from within the UK
- 6. Exchange students
- 7. Continuing undergraduate
students from the UK
- 8. Room allocation dates
1.
Disabled students and those with declared and medically certified
health problems are given first priority. We have a policy of
integrating students with a disability within our general student
community.
Located on the main campus, Cayley Hall has ramped approaches
and a number of ground floor purpose-built easy access study
bedrooms for students with disabilities. The Deaf Alerter’
system has been installed in Blocks ‘A’ and ‘B’. Students with
mobility considerations are advised to visit the campus to assess
its suitability for their individual needs.
It is recommended that applicants with a disability first
contact Rosemary Laidlaw, Disability Support Adviser on
01723357215or email R.Laidlaw@hull.ac.uk discussing
any accommodation needs at an early stage is very important.
Students with a disability who will require University
accommodation are requested to contact the Accommodation Office as
soon as they accept an offer (firmly or provisionally) in order
that appropriate accommodation can be reserved for them. Our
contact numbers are 01723 357349/357373/357245.
2. The University of Hull Scarborough Campus has a stock of
residential places reserved to meet the needs of virtually all
newly arriving unaccompanied undergraduates and most international
students, with the possible exception of a few visiting students
and some ‘clearing’ candidates or very late applicants. In a normal
year most applicants who qualify will be offered accommodation (not
necessarily in their first choice of residence – this depends on
demand, which varies each year). On occasions, where demand exceeds
supply, later applicants will be directed to local guest houses
which are modestly priced by UK standards (charges payable by the
individual) until vacancies are identified in either University
owned or managed accommodation (usually within 2 weeks).
3. Undergraduate students from overseas – A stock of
accommodation sufficient to meet the predicted needs of all new and
continuing unaccompanied undergraduate students from overseas is
reserved for their use. Students admitted during the later stages
of our accommodation admissions procedure, after 1 September 2012,
are advised that, as time moves on, available options become fewer
and fewer until our stock is fully let. If demand exceeds our
capacity, those whom we cannot permanently accommodate on arrival
will be directed to local guest houses (charges payable by the
individual) until permanent places are found.
4. Postgraduate Students from overseas – A small number of rooms
in University managed accommodation will be allocated to
postgraduate students coming directly from overseas. Applications
for places should be submitted to the Accommodation Office. To be
considered for University managed accommodation you must have an
unconditional confirmed offer to study here at the University of
Hull Scarborough Campus and the Accommodation Office must have
received a completed accommodation application form and
confirmation of payment of your room deposit before 1 September
2012. Postgraduate students who cannot be offered accommodation
will be assisted to locate private sector accommodation.
5. Postgraduates from within the UK – The university has limited
accommodation available to postgraduates from within the UK.
When all accommodation has been allocated the Accommodation office
will provide assistance to find accommodation in the private
sector. They will be sent accommodation lists of properties
available and can be put in touch with other postgraduate students
also studying at Scarborough. All students are advised to
visit Scarborough before arranging their accommodation.
6. Exchange students – A limited number of rooms in Cayley Hall
may be reserved to meet the expected demand from exchange students
(for both full session and one semester applicants). In the event
of demand exceeding supply, later arrivals may be directed to
private sector accommodation.
7. Continuing undergraduate students – The University helps
continuing undergraduate students to take up places in University
managed student houses.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide accommodation for
the following:
Students with children and expectant mothers/students who wish
to be accompanied by their family
Part-time or non-registered students – The University regrets
that it is unable to provide accommodation for part-time and
non-registered students. Private sector residence is recommended.
Council Tax implications need to be taken into account.
Married couples – accommodation provided by the University is
designed to meet the needs of single unaccompanied students.
Married couples prefer to set up their own home in the private
sector.
8. Your room allocation will only be held until 9am on 1
October 2012. Should you fail to collect your key by this deadline,
your room will be re-allocated and your deposit may not be
refunded. Late arrivals will be assisted with temporary
accommodation, allocated a permanent room if available, or assisted
to find private sector accommodation. The final day of registration
is Monday 15 October 2012.
Factors to take into consideration:
- Local students whose homes are within commuting distance of the
campus are invited to contact the Accommodation Office for
information on taking up University residence
- Mature students: The residential environment preferred by
mature students can be different from that of younger
undergraduates - generally, Cayley Hall or the larger
University-managed properties are unsuitable, though some may wish
to apply for 1 of the smaller managed houses, where rooms can be
allocated to mature students
- Students who are required to spend a year away from Scarborough
as part of their course (e.g., professional experience placements)
are encouraged to contact the Accommodation Office before they
depart to arrange accommodation for when they return
