Becoming an Ambassador

Could I be a Student Ambassador?
If you’re enjoying higher education and your time at Hull University and you’ve some spare time to share that experience with others, encouraging them to aim higher, then you might like to volunteer as a Student Ambassador.

What does a Student Ambassador do?
Student Ambassadors are called upon to take part in a wide variety of activities and projects organised by the Student Recruitment Service, like…

  • Greeting University visitors and showing them around campus
  • Allowing prospective students to shadow you for a day
  • Working with groups of younger pupils and prospective students in facilitating higher education awareness
  • Working with individual pupils as a mentor/buddy
  • Working with groups of prospective students needing support and encouragement through the application process
  • Working in schools as a classroom assistant
  • Working with groups of regional prospective students in Summer School activities to raise awareness of higher education opportunities
  • Visiting schools and colleges and speaking about student and Hull life

How much time will it involve?

This will vary according to individual activities. Taking a group of visitors around the campus may take no more than an hour, while other projects will require a regular commitment throughout the year. Summer School may involve a week’s residential stay in July.

Will I need training?

Again, this varies with the activity. When mentoring individual students and pupils, it’s important that you feel confident in dealing with certain situations, so a training programme will be available. Other activities may include short group sessions explaining roles and responsibilities.

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Taking an active part in university life and acquiring transferable skills employers are looking for is important. Being a Student Ambassador can help develop these skills and will be something to add to your CV.  We offer a voluntary scheme whereby you can keep account of your hours and receive accreditation for your volunteering.

For activities where outside funding is available, or where the activity is out of semester time, you may receive payment to cover travel and other expenses. Otherwise it might just be fun and a way of meeting like-minded people!
