Employability Statement

The University of Hull has an excellent track record of helping its students to succeed in work.

We know how important it is for you to get the job you want. Studying at Hull will mean that you have access to the skills you need to prosper: our alumni have achieved success at the top level of every sector – from commerce and politics to science and the arts. We are committed to developing student enterprise, entrepreneurship and employability through our programmes of study.

Employability as part of your course
The University provides a wealth of employability initiatives that you can take as part of your academic studies. Each academic department uses guest lecturers to share real-world experiences, and many of our courses are accredited by professional bodies. Contact the individual individual department to find out more.

Our free electives system enables you to choose a module in addition to your main area of study and helps you develop valuable skills to maximise your potential – e.g. business and entrepreneurship, languages or career management skills. These are available for undergraduates and postgraduates.  

A wide range of undergraduate work experience opportunities and placements are available. These vary in length and by occupational areas – e.g. the professional experience programmes in the Business School, the Politics Department’s Parliamentary placements in Westminster and industrial placements in digital media and in our new Legal Advice Centre (staffed by law students) to gain hands-on experience.

How the University supports your career planning and getting a job

University Careers Service Centre
It’s free to use as soon as you start and until after you have graduated. Careers professionals provide confidential and impartial individual guidance and advice:

• CV Clinic and practice interview sessions
• Networking events (often called job fairs) for all subject areas, where you get the chance to meet employers on campus
• Practice psychometric tests and self-marketing techniques
• Access to thousands of job vacancies, vacation/summer opportunities, graduate training schemes, work placements and graduate internships (newly developed and proving popular in bridging the gap into your first job) with local businesses as well as national corporations

Enterprise
Students wanting to start their own business can benefit from the fantastic facilities and incubator space on campus at the Enterprise Centre. The Creative Enterprise Laboratory in Scarborough allows students to work on business solutions for local companies with paid internships.

Hull University Union provides a job exchange which advertises part-time and casual work that you can undertake alongside your studies, plus volunteering opportunities through Hull University Social Services Organisation, which can also boost your employability.
