The programme establishes theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of child development and health and diversity from 0–7 years. It explores from national and international perspectives the ideas underpinning the study of childhood, young children and their development, emphasising the contribution of child centred play based approaches to learning.
The programme encourages students to apply specialist knowledge in local early childhood settings through a critical examination of current Government-supported initiatives and policies. Students also develop knowledge and understanding of the particular theories and strategies necessary for success as a professional in the early childhood workforce.
The programme concludes with a dissertation module in which students conduct an individual research project, typically within the early childhood sector.
